Protect Your Skin from the Summer SunEach year there are more new cases of skin cancer than cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon combined. The good news is that skin cancers can be easily treated. If detected early, nearly 100% can be cured. Protect your skin this summer by adhering to the following recommendations from Roswell Park's skin cancer team:
• Seek the shade, especially between 10 am and 4 pm. • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat. • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and protection against both UVA and UVB rays. • Avoid outdoor tanning and especially tanning booths. Doctors also recommend you check your entire body for atypical moles or other changes every month. Check out this helpful tip sheet to learn more. Remember to have fun in the sun--responsibly!
What Sunscreens Are Top-RatedThis Fourth of July, you don't want to spend your time outside worrying about whether you're using a sunscreen that is actually safe and effective. That's where EWG comes in. We recently released our 2010 Sunscreen Guide, where you can find our top-rated sunscreens, how major brands rank and tips to stay safe in the sun. EWG has analyzed more than 500 sunscreens, and we can only recommend a small fraction of those on the market. Many of the products we looked at didn't live up to their flashy slogans and packaging. Sunscreens with an SPF higher than 50 can give a false sense of security, and there is startling new data linking vitamin A to accelerated development of skin tumors and lesions. Our 2010 Sunscreen Guide will help you figure out what works and what's hype by showing you how more than 500 different products rank. Click here to find the right sunscreen for yourself and your family. Have a Happy Fourth of July!
